Saudi-led air raids killed a Shia Houthi rebel leader and 40 other fighters near the kingdom’s southwestern border with Yemen, satellite news channel Al-Arabiya reported on Thursday.

Slain Houthi leader Saleh al-Houthi Mouawad Kibsi, his brother and two of his companions died in the air raids and shelling, Al-Arabiya said.

Kibsi was in charge of the Iran-backed Houthis' military operations in Yemen along the border area with the Saudi southwestern city of Najran, the news channel said.

Saudi-led coalition jets pounded positions held by the Houthi and their allies, said military sources loyal to the internationally recognised government of Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who had to flee the country when the rebels overran Sanaa in September 2014 and pushed south.

But the pro-rebel news agency Saba said civilian homes were also struck, and reported other air raids in the northern province of Saada, a Houthi stronghold near the border with Saudi Arabia.

A Saudi woman was killed on Thursday and seven other people were wounded by shelling from Yemen, the Saudi civil defence said.

Saba said Sanaa airport had been closed since Tuesday when the Saudi-led coalition began a wave of air raids in and around the capital for the first time in three months. The air strikes came after the United Nations at the weekend suspended the talks it is brokering between Yemen's government and the Houthi rebels.

The UN broke off the peace talks after the Houthis and their allies, supporters of ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh, appointed a 10-member "supreme political council" to run Yemen.

The Saudi-led coalition also resumed its air campaign after the Houthis began launching operations on the Saudi border, which Riyadh called a “red line”, al-Arabiya reported.

Pro-Houthi forces control most of the northern half of Yemen’s while forces loyal to Hadi share control of the rest of the country with local tribes, Al-Arabiya said.

The UN says over 6,400 people have been killed in the fighting since the Saudi-led air strikes began in March year.

The fighting has also driven 2.8 million people from their homes and created a humanitarian crisis, leaving more than 80 percent of the population in need of humanitarian aid.
