The mission being led by European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to war-torn Libya next week needs a "clear plan" on how to resolve its political crisis and ongoing conflict, according to the head of the Italian Chamber for the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
“I hope that European foreign ministers will head to Libya on January 7 with clear ideas and not to depend only on goodwill," said Pier Ferdinando Casini.
"We are already too late. Either Europe and Italy wake up, or Libya will be lost," added Casini, a centrist politician who is a member of the Italian Senate.
Borell will lead the EU's mission to Libya next Tuesday, in which Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and his French, German and British counterparts are also taking part.
Italy has extensive energy interests in oil-rich Libya, which was an Italian colony from 1911-1943.
