European countries like Italy and France can bring their "vocation for peace and cooperation" to conflict wracked Libya and the Sahel region, head of state Sergio Mattarella said on Monday during a visit to Paris.
"Europe can transfer its vocation for peace and cooperation to nearby areas like Libya and the Sahel," Mattarella said after talks at the Elysee Palace with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.
"In this regard, France and Italy are absolutely called upon to cooperate - as they are doing," Mattarella stated.
During their talks, Mattarella and Macron also covered transatlantic ties, he said.
"France and Italy...are aware of the importance of playing a peacemaking role, of fostering cooperation and growth - regarding the future of Europe but also that of neighbouring regions," Mattarella underlined.
