The Italian government has donated 11 million euros to help migrants from Libya, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad to return home if they wish to, as well to evacuate vulnerable migrants and refugees from Libya and Niger for resettlement, the foreign ministry said in statement.
The Italian funds will be channelled through a project called 'Protection and sustainable solutions for migrants and refugees along the Central Mediterranean route' and will significantly improve their living conditions," said the statement.
The project is being managed by the European Union, the United Nations migration agency the International Organization for Migration and the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the statement said.
The Italian donation will help support the UNHCR-managed Emergency Transit Mechanism in Niger, which airlifts Libya and from Niger before they are resettled, the statement added.
