During bilateral talks in New Delhi, Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar appealed for a rapid ceasefire in Russia's 10-week-old offensive amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
"On Ukraine, the two ministers expressed their concern at the ongoing humanitarian crisis and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities," the foreign ministry stated in a readout of the talks on Friday.
"They also underlined the importance of safeguarding the international order based on the UN Charter, with special regard to the respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity," said the readout.
Di Maio and Jaishankar exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, the readout said. Besides Ukraine, the ministers looked at Afghanistan and Indo-Pacific and cooperation in multilateral forums including the G20 (Group of Twenty).
