Italy wants to strengthen its "excellent" bilateral relations with Cyprus the foreign ministry tweeted after foreign minister Luigi Di Maio held talks with president Nicos Anastasiades in Nicosia on Tuesday,
"FM @luigidimaio met the President of the Republic of Cyprus @AnastasiadesCY, discussing the excellent status of bilateral relations and of EU-related cooperation," read the tweet.
Di Maio and Anastasiades' talks focused on "bilateral cooperation and European matters," the foreign ministry said in a separate statement.
Di Maio also had talks in Nicosia on Tuesday with his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides, the foreign ministry stated.
The talks centred on " a common approach to European issues, economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, migration, Libya and the Eastern Mediterranean, according to the foreign ministry statement.
During his one-day trip to Nicosia, Di Maio was also due to meet UN special representative and head of the UNFICYP peacekeeping mission on Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, the statement said.
