Italy has inoculated a million people against COVID-19 novel Coronavirus since the campaign kicked off across Europe in late December, premier Giuseppe Conte's office tweeted on Friday.
"Today Italy reached the total of one million doses of vaccines against COVID-19. The first phase of the vaccination campaign, which began on 27 December, is targeting health and social service workers and care home residents and staff," read the tweet.
The COVID-19 jabs have been administered in 293 centres across Italy and in the next few weeks the over-80s will start to be vaccinated, followed by the rest of the population, Conte's office said.
Italy is experiencing a third Coronavirus surge and has recorded 2,352,423 cases and 81,325 deaths from the disease over the past year, making it one of the world's worst affected countries.
