Blast-hit Lebanon is a friend and needs more aid from from Italy, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Monday.

"In front of hundreds of dead and thousands of wounded we can not pretend nothing has happened. More aid for Lebanon, a people hit hard in recent days who also need our support, " Di Maio wrote on Facebook.

"When we were in trouble, many countries helped us. In such a situation, faced with a tragedy like the one that has occurred, we cannot ignore Lebanon's cry for help," the post added.

Several humanitarian flights have left from Italy bound for Beirut over the past week carrying essential medical supplies, hygiene kits and teams of experts to help Lebanese authorities deal with the fall-out from the huge explosion at the capital's port.

The 4th August blast killed over 170 people, wounded some 6,000 and left hundreds of thousands homeless. A fire is believed to have detonated 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored for six years without safety measures at Beirut's port.

Lebanon's government resigned on Monday after days of protests over the blast which destroyed the port and its only grain silo, stoking fears of food shortages in the bankrupt country where a million people already live below the poverty line.
