Libyan sides nearing agreement says UN envoy

Libya's rival factions are close to reaching "consensus" and to ending its political crisis, the United Nations envoy to the country told a session of the United Nations Security Council in New York on Thursday.

"I have a lot of faith that we are close to a consensus," Ghassan Salame told the UN Security Council session, which was chaired by Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano.

The past two months have seen "significant progress" thanks to "permanent contacts" between the Libyan factions, Salame said.

Salame in September unveiled a new action plan aimed reaching an accord between the UN-backed government of national accord in Tripoli and the rival administration based in Libya's eastern city of Tobruk and ending the conflict in Libya, which spiralled into chaos after the ouster of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The agreement reached between the government of national accord and Tobruk will pave the way for elections under Salame's plan.
