A court in northwest Italy handed a Moroccan truck driver a six-month suspended prison sentence and fined him 20,000 euros on Tuesday for people smuggling.
Police arrested the Moroccan last week police and seized his truck after they found three undocumented migrants hidden inside the vehicle in the Maritime Alps near the French border.
Police stopped the Moroccan at the Maddalena mountain pass near Demonte in the province of Cuneo, southwest of Turin.
The Moroccan allegedly charged the three migrants around 500 euros each for the journey. All three migrants had been served with expulsion orders by Italian authorities, said police.
The Moroccan is a long-time Italian resident.
