Six migrants drown in shipwreck off Libya

Six migrants perished when their inflatable dinghy sank off the Libyan coast, Italian coastguard said on Tuesday. A total 114 people including 24 minors and eight women were rescued from the shipwreck on Monday, according to coastguard.

Three children under five were among the minors rescued from the stricken dinghy by the Sos Mediterranee, a ship operated by Italian, German and French charities.

One ten-year old boy was floating face down in the water when he was rescued, doctors said.

"He had lost consciousness after inhaling fuel and swallowing water but fortunately we managed to save him in time and stabilise him," said Sarah Giles from the Doctors without Borders charity.

The rescued migrants were suffering from hypothermia, petrol burns and the effects of inhaling fuel, according to doctors.

"Survivors told us the dingy set sail from Libya at 2 am but after two hours at sea began to take on water," said Sos Mediterranee's rescue operations coordinator Mathias Menge.

"We did everything we could but unluckily six people lost their lives in this tragedy."

One of the migrants drowned at sea and their body was not recovered, rescuers said.

A total of 341,055 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea this year through 13 November, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy, the International Organisation for Migration said on Tuesday.

As people smugglers increasingly resort to flimsy, overladen inflatable boats, IOM said close to 4,300 people were reported missing or dead in the Mediterranean in 2016, the deadliest year on record.
