Agronomists join forces to feed the planet

More than 800 agronomists from all over the globe gathered at Milan's Expo 2015 trade fair on Tuesday to hammer out a blueprint for future world food security.

"Different solutions are needed to nourish the planet," said the president of the World Association of Agronomists, Maria Cruz Diaz Alvarez.

"This is why we need to pool our expertise," Alvarez told the opening of the association's 6th annual congress in Milan entitled 'Food and Identity'.

"All the world's agronomists need to work together," Alvarez stated, praising role being played in world food security and agricultural production by Expo 2015, taking place in Milan from 1 May-31 October.

The agronomists will draft a global set of principles for feeding the planet at a series of round-tables on six themes: biodiversity and genetic improvement; sustainability and productivity; development and local identity; food and food waste; climate change and the land; and cultural planning and social responsibility.

The blueprint, called the World Agronomy Charter, will be presented to Italy's agriculture minister Maurizio Martina on Friday, when the conference ends.
