Italy realised "belatedly" the damage done to it by its support for Libya's internationally recognised premier Fayez al-Sarraj and his government, eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar's spokesman said on Thursday.
"Italy realised the damage done to it belatedly by its backing of the leader of the Government of National Accord," Ahmed al-Mismari said in an interview with Libya's 218Tv.
"The Italian government has now got to know Sarraj's true nature because he harms national interests in Libya," Mismari said.
Mismari was referring to controversial deals on security and maritime jurisdictions which were signed by the GNA and Turkey on 27 November after members of the GNA and Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erogan held a closed-door meeting in Istanbul, according to Turkish authorities.
The agreements called for an immediate end to military operations near Libyan oil fields, in order to protect personnel and installations, and mapped out a sea boundary between Libya and Turkey close to Crete.
Greece said on Tuesday it had launched a complaint with the United Nations and last week expelled Libya's ambassador over the sea boundary accord, which it called a 'blatant violation of international law'.
The Sarraj government and allies militias have been battling forces allied with Haftar since April when his self-styled Libyan National Army launched an offensive to seize control of Tripoli. Over 1,000 people have died in the fighting amid a military stalemate.
Libya was an Italian colony from 1911-1943.
