Violence against women is "an odious and unacceptable crime," and Italy's diplomats and foreign aid officials are "at the forefront" of efforts to fight the scourge, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Monday
"Violence against women is an odious and unacceptable crime," Di Maio said in remarks on the foreign ministry's Twitter account.
The tweet marked International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
"Italy - through diplomacy and foreign aid - is doing its utmost to prevent and combat gender-based violence and to champion women's rights in the world," the tweet continued.
In separate tweet, Di Maio praised Italy's Red Code initiative to help victims of domestic violence report their abusers.
"Today it is ever-more important to talks about violence against women and their children and yet more important to act. The Red Code is step in this direction...violence is the opposite of love," the tweet added.
