Italian tourist faces expulsion for supporting PKK

An Italian tourist is due to be deported from Turkey for allegedly posting to Internet photos of the PKK Kurdish separatist group's fighters and training camps with statements of support for the outlawed group.

Giovanna Lanzavecchia has spoken to Italian consular officials and should be sent back to Italy "by Wednesday at latest with a ban on returning to Turkey for five years", Italian daily La Repubblica quoted her father Marco Lanzavecchia as saying on Monday.

"She is in a single cell and is being well treated," Repubblica cited him as adding.

The 24-year-old from Como, near Milan, was arrested on Sunday at an internet cafe in Istanbul and taken to a detention centre for foreigners, Turkish media reported.

Turkish authorities consider the PKK a terrorist organisation and the standoff between the Turkish government and PKK has claimed the lives of 300 government troops and police officers since it re-erupted in July 2015.

The PKK has been fighting for Kurdish independence from Ankara since 1984. The group's goal is a Kurdish state in parts of Turkey and Iraq.
