Italy has sent 22 tonnes of emergency supplies and shelters for victims of the worst flooding in Somalia's recent history, which has forced over 370,000 people from their homes.

The aid was flown to Mogadishu airport aboard a humanitarian flight from the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot in Brindisi, southern Italy late on Thursday, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The aid items included tents, hygiene kits, blankets, power generators and medical kits to prevent cholera, according to the statement.

The shipment will support the UN Food Programme's efforts to help people in Somalia's flood-hit Hirshabelle, Jubaland and Southwest states, the statement said.

More than 547,000 people have been affected by the flooding in Somalia which started on 21 October after entire reaches of the Juba and Shabelle Rivers saw high water levels following moderate to heavy season rains.

The Shabelle, which runs through Hirshabelle and Southwest states and the Juba, which extends the length of Jubaland, require constant maintenance and upkeep, which has been lacking for several decades, according to the UN.
