Italy may host multilateral Balkans summit

At talks in Belgrade on Tuesday, Italy's foreign minister Antonio Tajani, defence minister Guido Crosetto and Serbia's president Aleksander Vucic mulled the idea of organising a Balkans summit in Rome.

"We also discussed a possible multilateral meeting between representatives of the Balkan countries, which we could organise in Rome," Tajani stated without elaborating further.

Tajani and Crosetto were in Belgrade and Pristina on Tuesday for meetings with their Serbian and Kosovan counterparts in a bid to highlight Italy's wish play a major role in peace-building efforts in the region.

The visit came a day after the European Union warned of the risk of escalating tensions fuelled by an unresolved dispute over Serbian-registered car number-plates used by minority ethnic Serbs in Northern Kosovo.

Serbia has said it will never recognise the independence of Kosovo, its former province, which unilaterally declared independence in February 2008.
