Italy will keep helping Afghanistan through overseas aid and institutional capacity building programmes as well as training of local security forces, the country's permanent representation at NATO tweeted on Tuesday.
"A picture of the last Italian soldiers returning from Afghanistan, following the drawdown of (NATO's) Resolute Support mission," read the tweet with a photo taken on 30 June - the day that Italy's 20-year-old mission to the war-torn country formally ended.
"But this is not the end of our commitment. Italy will keep on contributing through development cooperation and support to Afghanistan's institutions," the tweet underlined.
A total 50,000 Italian servicemen and servicewomen were deployed to Afghanistan, 723 were injured and 53 lost their lives during the mission.
