The Italian government is flying more than 16 tonnes of emergency medical supplies to Libya, which are due to reach the war-wracked country within days, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

The supplies include anti-trauma and surgical kits and are being despatched from the United Nations' humanitarian aid depot in Brindisi, southern Italy, the foreign ministry stated.

Deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re organised the airlift, according to the statement.

The World Health Organisation says at least 272 people have been killed and 1,282 wounded while over 30,000 people have been displaced in fighting in Tripoli between forces loyal to the UN-backed government and to eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar, who ordered an assault on the capital on 4 April.
