A court in Kuwait on Monday sentenced a man and his wife to death by hanging for torturing and killing their three-year-old daughter, local media said, citing a court statement.
The sentence is not final can be challenged at the court of Appeals and at Kuwait's Court of Cassation, Gulf News reported.
The child's father Salem Bouhan, 26, confessed to beating his daughter Isra with an electrical wire and pouring hot water on her in front of her mother, 23-year-old Amira Hussain, and three younger siblings.
Bouhan and Hussan were arrested in May last year after police received a tip-off, searched the couple's squalid flat in Kuwait City and found the child's body in a bag in the freezer.
The couple were charged with murder after forensic doctors said Isra's body had burns on the shoulders and feet and bore signs of torture, according to the interior ministry.
The ministry also said Bouhan and Hussan were drug addicts and were on drugs at the time of the killing.
During questioning, Bouhan claimed Isra had died after taking one of his pills but later admitted torturing her with hot water and beating her with an electric flex, Gulf News reported.
When he realised his daughter's condition was deteriorating, Bouhan said he went to a pharmacy and bought her medicines but she passed away, Gulf News said.
