Migration and the fight against trafficking were high on the agenda during talks in Rome on Friday between Italy's interior minister Luciana Lamorgese and Libya's first female foreign minister, Najla al-Mangoush.
Following Lamorgese's visit to Tripoli this week, her talks with Mangoush looked at areas of common interest including migratory flows, especially countering criminal organisations that traffick human beings and refugees' and migrants' human rights.
Lamorgese also stressed to Mangoush the need to strengthen cooperation programmes and bilateral security and counter-terrorism cooperation agreements, according to an interior ministry statement.
In talks in Tripoli on Monday with Libya's premier Abdelhamid Dbeibah and other top officials, Lamorgese floated the idea of a meeting in Rome attended by Libyan officials that would be aimed at boosting the European Union's work in Libya alongside the UN migration and refugee agencies, according to an interior ministry statement.
Italy has committed to a series of development initiatives in Libya and has also announced the creation of more humanitarian corridors to ease the migratory pressure on Libya, Lamorgese said.
