The crew that flew Pope Francis into Mexico City on Friday noticed a laser light shining on the plane as it prepared to land at the start of a five-day trip, Alitalia said in a statement Wednesday.

The jet's captain, Massimiliano Marselli, reported the incident to the control tower, which alerted local authorities, the airline said.

Alitalia called the communications "standard procedure" and said the Airbus A330, which flew out of Havana, Cuba, landed in Mexico City without harm to passengers or crew.

An audio recording from the pilots on board the four-year-old passenger jet reported the laser beam coming from a 12 o'clock position from a distance of 25 miles.

It is understood at the time of the attack, the aircraft was passing 8,000 feet at approximately 150 knots and was on final approach for the airport.

Two other flights, United 821 and KLM 685 also report being struck by a laser beam from the same location shortly afterwards.

The attack was the latest in a series of such laser-pointing incidents around the world.

Days earlier, after a Virgin Atlantic passenger jet was forced to return to London Heathrow airport after one of the pilots was injured in a laser attack.

Laser beams can cause temporary blindness in pilots and, in some cases, pilots have reported eye injuries that required medical treatment.
