Police on Tuesday in Sicily said they impounded "significant" assets from two alleged senior mafia members including companies, real estate and bank accounts.

Police seized the assets in the province of Caltanissetta from 61-year-old Calogero Grizzanti and 71-year-old Gaetano Falcone, which comprised four companies, six buildings and 68 plots of land as well as "numerous" bank balances.

Grizzanti is the alleged boss of the Sutera clan while Falcone is a prominent member of the Montedoro clan and has close ties to the Sicilian mafia leadership in the province of Caltanissetta, according to investigators.

Police said they carried out Tuesday's operation on the orders of anti-mafia prosecutors in Caltanissetta after a detailed probe into Falcone and Grizzanti's ill-gotten gains.
