Suu Kyi's imprisonment in Myanmar worries Italy

Italy is "deeply concerned" at Myanmar's deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi's move from house arrest to solitary confinement in a prison in the capital Nay Pyi Taw, the foreign ministry tweeted on Monday.

"Italy is deeply concerned by the Myanmar military regime decision (on Friday) to transfer ASSK to a jail in Nay Pyi Taw," read the tweet.

"We reiterate our appeal for the liberation of ASSK and all political prisoners and our call for an inclusive dialogue, the only way towards peace, stability and democracy," the tweet underlined.

Suu Kyi, 77, was arrested when the military overthrew her elected government in February 2021 and had been held at an undisclosed location Nay Pyi Taw for the past year.

The Nobel laureate has already been sentenced to 11 years in jail and denies a host of charges which have been widely condemned as politically-motivated.
