The United States wants to "deepen" ties with Italy, secretary of state Antony Blinken tweeted Thursday after phone talks with Italy's foreign minister that covered Libya and Navalny case and terrorism among current international issues.
"Today, Italian foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and I discussed ways we can deepen the US-Italy relationship," tweeted Blinken, who took office on Wednesday.
"I look forward to close cooperation with Italy as it leads the G20 this year," the tweet added.
In a traditional first day speech to State Department employees in Washington, Blinken pledged to restore global US leadership - a sharp contrast to the foreign policy stance of ex-president Donald Trump's administration.
