Adam was sexist to blame Eve for eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden and humanity's fall from grace, Pope Francis said on Wednesday at his general audience in St Peter's Square.
"Adam cuts a bad figure when he tells God he ate the apple because Eve gave it to him: it's always the poor woman's fault! We must defend women," Francis said.
In the Bible's Book of Genesis, Adam's wife Eve, the first woman on earth, was tricked by the serpent into eating the forbidden fruit and gave some of the fruit to Adam and he ate it too.
Christians believe that when Adam and Eve sinned in Eden and turned away from God they brought sin into the world and turned the whole human race away from God.
