Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano said on Wednesday he was 'not obliged' to tell Matteo Renzi, leader of the ruling centre-left Democratic Party, that he did not intend to stand for parliament again next year
"I told my wife of my decision and she fully agrees, and also my father and mother. Only those three people," Alfano told the Porta Porta TV chat show on Wednesday.
"Didn't I tell Renzi? I was not obliged to," Alfano said.
Alfano heads the centre-right Popular Alternative party, the Democratic Party's junior coalition partner in the government.
Italy's parliamentary elections are due to be held by 20 May 2018.
