Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte will on Tuesday meet Libya's United Nations backed prime minister Fayez al-Sarraj for talks on chaos-hit Libya, where a deadly month-long military escalation is gripping the capital, Tripoli.

Conte's talks with Sarraj are due to take place at 8.30 am at Palazzo Chigi, the Italian prime minister's office, it said in a statement.

Sarraj's visit to Rome is the first leg of a European tour aimed at mustering support for a ceasefire in Tripoli and opposition to eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar's "aggression", the Sarraj government's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The UN says at least 432 people have died, 2,069 people have been injured, and over 50,000 have had to flee their homes since fighting broke out between Haftar's Libyan National Army militia and forces loyal to the Sarraj government after Haftar in early April ordered an assault to seize the capital.

Sarraj is visiting Europe with Libya's interior minister Fathi Bashagha and foreign minister Mohammed Siala on his trip, according to Libyan broadcaster Al-Ahrar. The ministers are due to travel to Berlin later on Tuesday and from there to Paris and London, Al-Ahrar reported.

A former Italian colony, Libya has been in chaos since the Nato-backed ouster of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with rival administrations in the east and west backed by a myriad of militias vying for control of the oil-rich country.
