Honour guard greets Sarraj for meeting with Conte

Libya's UN-backed prime minister Fayez al-Sarraj was greeted by an honour guard in Rome when he arrived for talks with Italy's populist premier Giuseppe Conte at his office on Friday. The honour guard saluted Sarraj in the courtyard of Palazzo Chigi before he headed inside for his meeting with Conte.

Conte was later on Friday due to meet the United Nations special envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame at Palazzo Chigi, Conte's office said.

In further preparations for an international conference on Libya talking place in Italy next month, the president of Libya's High Council of State, Khaled al-Meshri is expected for talks in Rome on Monday, Adnkronos learned from foreign ministry sources.

The speaker of the Tobruk-based parliament in eastern Libya, Aguila Saleh, is expected in the Italian capital on Wednesday, according to the sources.

Conte is also expected to hold talks in Rome next week with Libya's powerful eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar, the foreign ministry sources said.

The international summit on 12-13 November in Palermo aimed is aimed at stabilising Italy's turmoil-wracked former colony, an event which the government hopes will be attended by all Libya's rival factions and key players in the region.

Haftar has confirmed "several times" that he will attend the Palermo conference, foreign minister Enzo Moaovero Milanesi said on Thursday.
