Police in the eastern Sicilian port city of Catania on Wednesday said they arrested an Italian convert to Islam for allegedly instigating terrorism.
The 32-year-old man is accused of spreading terrorist propaganda over the internet and for inciting extremists to join terrorist organisations, according to investigators. He was held on the orders of local magistrates, said police.
The man is from Catania, has a criminal record and his arrest followed a "complex" investigation by counter-terrorism and postal police in Catania.
The suspect became a Muslim in 2011, police said.
There was no immediate reaction to his arrest from the government.
