Forces loyal to Libya’s powerful eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar have captured the southwestern Sharara oilfield - the country's biggest - and say it is "secure" and ready to resume production, the Libyan Express reported Tuesday on its website.
“Sharara is completely secure and ready to resume pumping,” LNA spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari said Tuesday in a telephone interview.
Guards at the field had handed over the Sharara field "peacefully" to LNA forces, Mismari added.
Armed protesters had closed down the 300,000 barrel-per-day field in December, demanding more money and investment in the remote region, the paper said.
