Fico condemns New Zealand mosque massacre

Italy's lower house of parliament speaker Roberto Fico deplored the mosque attacks by suspected white supremacists on Friday in Christchurch, New Zealand, which killed at least 49 people and injured over 20 in the country's worst-ever mass shooting.

"The terrible terrorist attacks on two mosques in New Zealand causes dismay. They are acts of unprecedented violence and hatred that must be roundly condemned," Fico said in a statement.

The message sent condolences from Fico and the Chamber of Deputies to the families of the victims of the attacks "and the entire New Zealand community which is wracked by deep pain at this moment".

One suspect in the attack has been charged with murder and three people were taken into custody over the attacks, police said. Explosive devices attached to cars were uncovered by security forces and commissioner Mike Bush urged all mosques across the country to close their doors for the time being.

The attacks have drawn international condemnation.
