Eni on Thursday signed cooperation deals with Algeria's state energy company Sonatrach in the upstream, research-and-development, decarbonization and training sectors, bolstering a partnership between the two companies, the Italian major said in a statement.
“Today's agreements represent the commitment made by our companies to strengthen a historic partnership, in compliance with a shared strategy to accelerate the development of decarbonisation projects as part of our commitment of achieving our carbon neutrality goal, said Eni chief executive Claudio Descalzi.
The first agreement aims to create a gas and crude oil development hub in Algeria's Berkine basin and is part of a programme to spur exploration-and-development activities in the region, the Eni statement said.
Eni also signed a memorandum of understanding with Sonatrach in the new-technologies sector, focussing on renewable energy, biofuels and hydrogen, according to the statement.
The companies will also collaborate in areas such as staff training, Eni said.
Eni is the main international company operating in Algeria, where it has been present since 1981. It has 48 mining permits in the North African country and produces 90,000 barrels of oil per day.
