The hell that awaits those who shun God is not a fiery torture chamber but permanent exile from divine happiness or bliss, Pope Francis said on Friday.
"Permanent exile from God who gives us happiness and who loves us so much: this is 'hellfire' and eternal damnation," Francis said.
"Those who are barred from entering the Kingdom of Heaven always went their own way, distancing themselves ever further from the Lord," Francis continued.
Francis made the remarks in a sermon as he celebrated mass at the Vatican's Santa Marta hotel, where he has lived since being elected Pope.
