Priests sent out by Pope Francis to dioceses in the Jubilee Year of Mercy that starts in December will be able to absolve "the sin of procured abortion," a senior Vatican official said on Tuesday.
"Abortion will certainly be among the sins that can be absolved," the head of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation, Rino Fisichella, told national news agency Ansa.
During confession, priests will be able to absolve the woman who has an abortion and the doctors and other medical staff who helped her, Fisichella said.
