The international community has to unite over war-torn Libya to ensure its people get back their democratic right to elect their leaders in free and fair polls, the country prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah stated on Wednesday

"Unity on the part of the international community and guarantees that the voice of the Libyan people will be heard are vital during this key stage in Libya's history," Dbeibah tweeted from a Berlin conference.

"We have many challenges ahead of us but there is a big opportunity for democracy and to give back to the people the right to choose their representatives through free and fair elections," Dbeibah went on.

The second Berlin conference "aims to renew the pledges made at the first conference and to work out "with friends of Libya" the best ways to stabilise the country, preserve its territorial integrity, the unity of its people and its national sovereignty," Dbeibah tweeted.

At the first Berlin conference held in January last year, world powers vowed to uphold a much-violated UN arms embargo on Libya and to cease external meddling in the country. However many challenges remain, among them the removal of all foreign mercenaries from Libyan soil, the reunification of the country's institutions and the holding of elections slated for 24 December.
