Militants from the Islamic State are handing out leaflets in mosques in Syria's eastern Deir Ezzor province 'informing' worshippers on jihad and why they must wage it, a monitoring group said Thursday.

The leaflets seek new recruits to IS and explain "the concept of jihad, its role and why it's obligatory for Muslims" the UK-based Syrian Human Rights Observatory reported.

The leaflets also set out the punishments that await Muslims who do not wage holy war against the "Crusaders and the secular coalition", the watchdog said.

The Syrian Human Rights Observatory relies for its information on a network of activists inside Syria.

A 'Sharia Court of the Islamic State” in Deir Ezzor on Tuesday sentenced 3 brothers to 400,000 lashes for each for killing their sister in 2010 "on the pretext that she lost her honour,” the monitor said.

The court ordered each of the brothers to receive 200 lashes each per day, it said.
