Following the landmark visit by Pope Francis to Rome's synagogue, Italy's Muslims are aiming for a visit by Pope Francis to Rome's grand mosque, one of its leaders told Adnkronos.

"This is a possibility that we are working on," Yahya Pallavicini, the vice-president of Italy's largest grouping of Muslim organisations, Coreis, told Adnkronos.

Pallavicini, an Italian convert to Islam involved in inter-faith dialogue, attended Francis' first visit to Rome's synagogue on Sunday, where the pope warmly greeted him.

During Sunday's landmark visit amid tight security, Francis referred to recent deadly Islamist terror attacks in Europe and in Africa, condemning violence in the name of religion and urging Catholics and Jews to work together for peace.

It was the first visit made by Francis to a synagogue as pontiff.

He became the third head of the Catholic Church to visit Rome's synagogue after Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.
