Italian Muslim jihadist suspect held, Tunisian spouse expelled

Police in northern Italy on Tuesday detained an alleged Italian Muslim Islamic State sympathiser who planned to wage Jihad in Syria. Her Tunisian husband was deported and banned from Italy for 10 years, Italian authorities said.

Police said they arrested the 30-year-old Italian Muslim convert in the town of Brescia and searched her home. They seized various material from her and her husband's computers as well as the woman’s travel documents.

"Evidence gathered by investigators highlighted a concrete risk that she and her husband were about to leave for Syria," police said.

The woman is being probed for terrorist recruitment and she and her husband exalted IS on Facebook and expressed their desire to 'martyr' themselves for Jihad, investigators said.

On her Facebook page, the woman appeared in a black Niqab and wrote in a post to her husband: ''Only my body lives here. My soul and thoughts are in a very distant place...''

''Oh Allah, I ask for death on your path. I ask for a death in the country of your Prophet..., I swear I cannot wait," read another.

Her husband had ''liked'' the woman's posts, including others explicitly inciting Jihad, according to investigators, who had monitored the couple's activity, especially on social media.

The woman's Tunisian husband had encouraged her growing radicalisation and she had taken to wearing the full Niqab and rarely left her home without her husband, who had stopped visiting his in-laws, investigators said.

The couple, who have no children, married in a civil service in December last year, after having wed in an Islamic ceremony in 2010.

More than 90 people believed to be a security risk have been deported from Italy since the start of 2015 and over 400 have been arrested.
