Italy's overseas aid department has flown six tonnes of medical equipment to Siret, Romania for tens of thousands of Ukrainians who have fled there from their homeland since Russia's invasion in February.

The airlifted equipment includes medical kits (surgical, post-trauma and for the treatment of non-transmissible diseases) and humanitarian aid, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The humanitarian aid includes tents, blankets, heaters for tents, hygiene-sanitation kits and canisters to collect water, according to the statement.

The medical aid was flown from the United Nations' logistics hub in southern Italy within the framework of Italian OSC Doctors with Africa 'Cuamm Chernivtsi' humanitarian response for Ukraine.

The initiative is funded by several organisations which include the multi-donor Ukraine Humanitarian Fund managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Italy's overseas aid department made a 6 million euro contribution to the fund in March.
