Italy urges inclusive dialogue in coup-hit Guinea

In a statement on Monday, Italy's foreign ministry called for "inclusive dialogue" in Guinea after the military claimed to have seized power at the weekend from president Alpha Conde and to have detained him.

"Italy has learned with trepidation of the latest events in Guinea and strongly condemns any attempt to subvert the constitutional order by force," said the statement.

"It calls on all sides for inclusive dialogue aimed at a rapid restoration of the constitution," the statement added.

Mamady Doumbouya, head of Guinea's elite Special Forces Group announced the military takeover on Sunday.

The UN, African Union and regional body Ecowas have all condemned the overthrow of 83-year-old Conde, who won a controversial third term last October in presidential polls marred by violence and accusations of electoral fraud.
