Libya humanitarian appeal only 1% funded - UN

Almost two months after its launch, a humanitarian appeal for 166 million dollars to aid 1.3 million vulnerable people in conflict-torn Libya is 99 per cent unfunded, the United Nations warned Tuesday calling on nations to donate funds.

"This urgent appeal has received only 2.1 million, a paltry 1 per cent of the overall amount required. Just two donors have contributed funding,” the UN humanitarian coordinator for Libya, Ali Al-Zaatari, said in press statement issued from neighbouring on Tuesday.

“With winter temperatures plunging... I am increasingly concerned that vulnerable, conflict-affected people in Libya will continue to suffer due to a lack of meaningful and timely support,” Zaatari stated.

Libyan public and voluntary organisations cannot meet the needs of 2.4 million people "in desperate need of humanitarian aid" affected by four years of factional fighting, he said.

In recent months the UN has struggled to persuade two groups of Libyan officials who claim to be the country’s rightful leaders to band together. Last week, the parliament that is recognised by the international community rejected a unity government proposal.
