Crucial national polls slated for 24 December, the withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries from chaos-stricken Libya, and cooperation with Italy were on the agenda at talks in Tripoli between foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and interim premier Abel Hamid Dbeibah.
"Minister Luigi Di Maio met prime minister Abel Hamid Dbeibah in Tripoli. Italy backs the transition process and its primary objectives: 24 December elections and the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters," the foreign ministry tweeted.
"Dialogue also on bilateral cooperation," the tweet added.
Di Maio was in Tripoli for an international conference on stabilising Libya, aimed at resolving the thorniest issues facing the country ahead of the December vote. The conference was promoted by Libya's interim government and attended by western, regional and UN representatives.
