Italy's foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi on Monday tweeted congratulations to Eritrea's president Isaias Afwerki Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for signing an "historic" peace deal in Saudi Arabia.
"Milanesi expresses congratulations on behalf of the Italian government to President Afwerki and to Prime Minister Ahmed for signing in Jedda the historic peace agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia, a crucial step to ensure stability and security," read the tweet.
Officials did not reveal the details of the new deal aimed at bolstering a landmark peace accord signed in July between the two former Horn of Africa enemies. The pact ended two decades of enmity sparked by a two-year border conflict which broke out in 1998.
Saudi King Salman hosted Sunday's signing ceremony which was also attended by his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres.
