The Italian government has arranged the return home of some 86,300 citizens from 119 countries since the start of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, according to a foreign ministry statement.

As recently as on Sunday, 357 Italian citizens were repatriated from Great Britain, Belgium, Colombia and Tanzania while around 110 Italians returned home from Tunisia by ferry, the statement said.

"The foreign ministry and its network of embassies and consulates around the world continue to work around the clock to help citizens who are stuck abroad to return to Italy safely," the statement added.

Over 88,000 Italians were stranded abroad when the Covid-19 pandemic began earlier this year and countries suspended international flights and closed their borders.
