The leader of Italy's anti-immigrant Northern League party will on Friday pay a visit the central Lazio, Umbria and Marche regions which were devastated by a series of earthquakes over the past six weeks.

Salvini will visit the quake-hit towns of Foligno, Norcia, Arquata and Amatrice and meet their mayors.

On Wednesday, Umbria asked Italy's central government to suspend relocations of asylum-seekers to the region from southern Italy due to a lack of safe accommodation following the earthquakes.

The series of quakes began in the central Apennines on August 24 when a magnitude 6.2 tremor killed 298 people and left 4,000 homeless, causing an estimated four billion euros of damage.

The temblors have emptied towns and villages, left thousands of dwellings in ruins or uninhabitable, a total 26,000 people homeless, and have badly damaged many priceless artworks and churches
