Libya's internationally recognised parliament in the eastern city of Tobruk has voted against a unity government named last week under a UN-brokered deal aimed at uniting the country's warring factions.

Of 104 members attending the session in the eastern city of Tobruk, 89 voted against backing the government, the Press Solidarity group reported.

The vote is seen as a major blow to UN efforts to unify the country's two rival parliaments.

The Tunis-based Presidential Council now has 10 days to put forward a new, shorter list of ministers for the unity government which was agreed this month by representatives of the country's rival political factions after two years of gruelling negotiations.

Western nations hope the formation of the new government will help bring stability and tackle the growing threat of Islamic State militants, who have exploited the country's power vacuum. The bloodthirsty jihadist group has stepped attacks in recent weeks and are targeting the country's oil infrastructure.

Libya has spiralled into chaos since the 2011 overthrow of dictator Muammar Gaddafi with rival administrations in Tripoli and Tobruk supported by an array of militias.
