United States secretary of state Mike Pompeo will next week make his first official visit to Italy and meet Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte, president Sergio Mattarella, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and Pope Francis.
Pompeo will begin the two-day visit on Tuesday, when he will hold talks with Mattarella and Conte, Adnkronos learns from diplomatic sources. On Wednesday, Pompeo will meet Di Maio according to the sources.
Pompeo is due to take part in a symposium on religious freedom being held at the Vatican on Wednesday and will have a private audience with Francis.
The head of US diplomacy will end his visit to Italy with trip to Abruzzo, from where his paternal great-grandparents emigrated to the US in the late 19th-century. Pompeo will then travel on to Montenegro, North Macedonia and Greece.
