Italy is "not alone" in its strenuous fight against the country's dramatic coronavirus outbreak and the entire world "must speak the same language - that of humanity" to end the pandemic, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio stated on Wednesday.
"Italy is not alone and today the whole world must speak the same language - that of humanity," Di Maio wrote in a message posted to his Twitter account.
Italy is making "massive efforts" to defeat the Covid-19 epidemic and the government must give a "concrete" response especially to doctors, nurses and other frontline medical staff battling the deadly virus, the message said.
The nation is under a drastic lockdown to try and contain the coronavirus epidemic and is receiving crucial medical items in short supply such as face masks, gloves, protective hazmat suits and testing kits as well as ventilators from countries all over the world.
Italy has recorded 6,820 deaths from Covid-19 - far more than any country - since the outbreak began a month ago - and at least 54,030 people have tested positive for the virus out of more than 69,000 cases, according to the civil protection agency.
Worldwide, the global pandemic has resulted in nearly 439,000 cases of Covid-19 and over 19,600 deaths according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
