Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio on Friday condemned Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine, saying it showed Moscow's "cruelty" and "irresponsibility".
"The imagines arriving from Ukraine in recent hours are disturbing and show the cruelty of the Russian government and the irresponsibility of this war," Di Maio tweeted.
According to US estimates, Russia has fired 200 missiles at Ukraine since Thursday, mostly hitting military installation but some wrecking apartment buildings and other civilian targets. Ukraine says at least 137 people have been killed.
Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes since Russia's offensive began, heading to family or fleeing for the border. Many who have remained in Kiev and other cities are spending the night cowering in subways and bunkers in scenes that Italy's premier Mario Draghi said are reminiscent "of the darkest days of European history".
